My Career

I have had a varied career path, which I believe brings with it a breadth of knowledge across many sectors.

I began my career journey by gaining a BSc Hons in Quantity Surveying.  I worked for two years in Edinburgh and Glasgow before deciding it just wasn’t for me.

I moved on to the Catering trade where I managed a number of cafes and a restaurant in Edinburgh.  I also went back to University to gain a degree in Clothing Design and Manufacture.

After graduating I worked for an outdoor wear company that specialised in supply mountain rescue teams, police forces and fire fighters with suitable workwear.  It was great fun, but I became pregnant with my first daughter and felt the pull of Shetland again.

So I moved back to Shetland after she was born and started teaching nightclasses in sewing interiors and clothing.  I also started working in the local museum.  That was the turning point for me, I used my Quantity Surveying skills to help the Trust that ran the museum to develop and open a new visitors centre within a lighthouse.

This then led to a post of Facilities Manager for the museum that I had originally worked in.

My career path took another turn when I moved on to become a Commercial Manager for the local district heating scheme.  Unfortunately I was made redundant from this post.

Alas this did not deter me, i used my Clothing degree and opened my own seamstress business doing alterations for weddings and home interiors.  I still do bits and pieces but not as much.

I also began a part time job with a local seafood producer as an accountant; which I still continue to do.

Who am I?

I am from Shetland as you will know! I absolutely love the beaches, fresh air and unspoiled beauty of the Islands.

We can have amazingly wild winters, sometimes summers too, where it can dark from 3pm and not get light again until 8am.  The summer we can have daylight for almost 24 hours.  A fun fact about Shetland is that we have almost no trees!  The wind can be pretty brutal and the salt in the air does not help their growth.  Its unique and a special place to raise a family.

I live with my husband and two daughters in Cuningsburgh, which is small village about 10 miles from the capital of Lerwick.

I lived in Edinburgh for 12 years before moving back to Shetland, and I loved the big city life.  It was a big change to move to Edinburgh and then a huge change to move back to Shetland again.  But I am in my happy place now!
